I am getting ready to leave my full-time job, and I am pretty frightened at the moment but also excited. Over a year ago, I began my journey of becoming a Pilates instructor, and my goal was to leave my full-time job anyway. I believe I set my intentions when I started my Pilates certification, and the universe is pushing me in the directions of my dreams.

After getting my BA in Dance back in 2009, I took the easy route by getting a job working in the marketing industry. It seemed everyone in my life was proud of me, so I thought this was the best decision. I didn’t know it at the time, but the corporate career path ended up just being exhausting for me. I was in a creative field, but I felt less than creative with all the hoops I needed to jump through just to get something approved. The things I loved doing were slipping away. In the past year, I have decided I need to make myself happy. I knew by doing this everything else in life will fall into place.

You may be reading this and in a similar situation as I am. Maybe you feel stuck, maybe you feel tired, maybe you feel like you are working to survive. I am here to say that there is another way, you can be happy and fulfilled while following your dreams. I am right on the cusp of making my dreams a reality and want to inspire you to take those first steps. Here are the things I have done in the past year to help bring me the happiness I am feeling today.live your dream

Set my intentions.
You read about writing down goals all the time, but for me it was more about writing down my intentions. I didn’t know what my future would look like because I go back and forth on what I think I want to do all the time. Do I want to teach dance? Get an MA degree? Be a stay at home mom? I just don’t know yet, even though I am 29! 🙂 The point is, our lives can change in an instant, we may one day wake up and decide we want a career change. There is nothing wrong with that. Instead of saying I want to quit my job by x date, I set the intention to make a career move that would make me feel more fulfilled in the next year. Things have worked out the way they were supposed to, and they will for you too! Get started on that list of intentions.

I made connections.
I have told my story to anyone who will listen because you never know who might know someone you need to meet in your life. By doing this, I became a member of CloudPeeps, which is a place for social media managers to find remote projects. If you have an interest in Community Management, check them out! It’s such a great community. Through CloudPeeps, I gained a freelance client, so I am not leaving my job without anything to fall back on. I have also found a new Pilates studio to teach at too so I can diversify. I put myself out there and networked my butt off, and things have begun to fall into place. Reach out and talk to people who are doing what you want to do and learn as much as you can from them! I am always open to answering more specific questions.

I shared my dreams with others.
My husband is the most amazing person in the world. We have had our share of struggles in our lives like anyone else, but we keep getting stronger after each trial. A little over a year ago, he was super unhappy with his work situation and money was tight for us. He made a change to another career that paid less, but somehow we have still made it. He is SO much happier, and because of this challenge, he has been so open to me wanting to make a career change myself. He knows what it feels like to be unhappy and he wants the best for me. I have his 100% support in all my endeavors. Having him be so supportive pushes me to become a success by my own definition because I don’t want to let myself down. If you have someone who will be your champion, by all means spill the beans about your dreams (wow I promise I wasn’t trying to make that rhyme). You will be so glad you have someone to bounce ideas off, and to support you.

I gave myself credit.
It’s so easy to undervalue ourselves and the things we have to offer the world. I didn’t give myself credit for the wealth of knowledge I have. I have been dancing my whole life and have a great awareness of anatomy. When I started my Pilates certification, I had all this negative self-talk about not being a good teacher. I had to stop that way of thinking because I am a great teacher. I did the same thing with my social media experience, 6 years experience, and I tried telling myself that I wasn’t good enough. I learned that I am valuable in all aspects, and I have a lot to offer to anyone that I choose to work with. The beauty of freelancing is I get to choose what projects I work on. I will be able to stretch my imagination and create things that are much more meaningful to me. I loved myself, quirks, and all.
You have to love yourself to have confidence. In the past year, I have worked just as much on my own personal growth as I have on making steps towards making my dreams a reality. If you aren’t happy with yourself, you won’t be happy with anything. This was the biggest key for me. Having a great job isn’t going to make you happy. I read a lot of blogs and self-help books and did a lot of thinking this past year. I have grown as a person, and I think if your intentions are to find true happiness, it needs to start with YOU! 🙂

I am a strong believer that what you put out will come back to your ten fold. Once you start to set your intentions, listen to your heart and believe in yourself, there isn’t anything that can stop you. You can make your dreams a reality!
