3 Tips To Make Your Memorial Day More Active

3-tips-to-make-your-memorial-day-more-activeCan you believe it’s Memorial Day this upcoming Monday? It’s the unofficial kickoff to Summer, and the weather in San Diego this weekend is going to be a bit gloomy. We had an 85 degree Christmas, and a 60 degree Memorial Day. I wish it was going to be a bit warmer, but I can’t complain too much when it’s 70 degrees 90% of the year. Don’t hate. By the way, the image I am using above just cracks me up. I had to use it.

I am making an evil grin right now, by the way. If you want something with a bit more punch, check out the Travel Workout I posted on the blog Wednesday. You will enjoy that one.

I hope you have some wonderful things planned for your family. My five year old nephew is coming to have a sleepover with my husband and I on Saturday, and I am looking forward to that so much! Also, BBQing with the family on Sunday. We have a pretty large family, so I do plan to challenge them with a few of the tips I share below. I will take pictures and share on Instagram and Twitter for your enjoyment.

Without further ado, here are my top 3 tips to make your Memorial Day more active.

// Take a Walk.
This one seems so simple and self explanatory. When your family and friends are over for a cookout, why not take a walk together before or after dinner. It’s a great way to unwind and connect with each other. This could be around the block, or you can make a goal to walk for a mile or two. Whatever it is, you will have quality time together without being distracted by the food.

// Hourly Challenge.
If you don’t follow me on Twitter yet, then you definitely should! On Memorial Day {starting at 9am PST} I will be posting an hourly fitness challenge that you can complete with your family. You can make it a competition – kids against adults for example. Keep track and give the winner a small prize! You can come up with your own hourly challenges too, just set a timer to go off every hour. And don’t be upset if the kids take the win!

// Create an Obstacle Course.
We did this with my family on Easter. We took random things from the garage {sleeping bags, paint buckets, a baseball bat} and let the kids create their own obstacle course. Each person had to complete each course. The kids loved it, they got to be active, creative and competitive. This was one of the most enjoyable things we have done as a family recently.

3 Tips to Make Your Memorial Day More Active Food

My friend Heather Pavlik has shared a round up of her favorite healthy Memorial Day recipes on her blog. Don’t miss out on that, you can put together your grocery list for Monday!

Well, there you have it. Simple, short and sweet. You don’t have to get to the gym to be active with your family. A little healthy competition never hurt anyone either, and it’s a great way to bond. Even if you don’t have kids at your Memorial Day gathering, the adults will enjoy these activities just as much. Especially if you have adults that are competitive. My dear loving husband and brother-in-law fit in this category. Enjoy the menu round up from Heather too. There are some great ideas there, especially the Pulled Pork with a recipe for DIY Maple BBQ Sauce that she just posted today! <3

I hope you enjoy these tips, and hope you enjoy this weekend with your loved ones. Seriously, who doesn’t LOVE a holiday weekend?
