The Epic List Of Healthy Camping Ideas

healthy camping ideas // Cohesive Fitness

This weekend, my husband and I enjoyed a wonderful camping trip. It was a last minute decision, because this was the last full weekend we have off together before he starts back up at school. This is actually our first camping trip together!

We are heading home today from a local spot that is only about an hour away, and the time without our phones and other distractions was much needed. As we were planning our meal ideas for our trip, I thought it would be fun to share some healthy camping tips and recipes that we used. {Spoiler alert: there are two very unhealthy desert options at the end, but you have to splurge sometimes right?}.

It’s definitely a challenge to eat healthy while camping, especially when hot dogs, salami sticks and granola bars are typical camping staples. Here I have compiles some tips to help you make healthier choices on your next camping trip!

The Epic List of Healthy Camping Ideas

//Plan ahead

I feel like planning ahead is a big theme around here lately at Cohesive Fitness, but it’s so true when it comes to camping. You will want to lay out exactly what meals you are going to be needing during your trip. Make sure you have consider the day you arrive and the day of departure as well. You don’t want to forget to bring something for breakfast on the day you’re leaving, only to find out that you are too hungry to pack up your tent! If you’re like me, you need to eat within thirty minutes of waking up otherwise you get a little cranky! 🙂

//Bring a cooler if possible

If you are going to a local campground or somewhere you will have access to your car, bringing a cooler is a great way to allow yourself some healthy options. Load your cooler with ice blocks or ice packs, rather than smaller cubes if possible. This will help your ice maintain longer. Also, try to open the cooler as infrequently as possible to maintain the integrity of the ice.

If you are able to bring a cooler, you can bring along fresh fruits and veggies, hummus, yogurt and eggs to give you some variety. Another tip is to freeze any liquids you may be bringing like water bottles or sports drinks, and use those as “ice” in the cooler to save space.

//Stay hydrated

I would recommend staying away from sports drinks which are loaded with sugar, unless you are about to be doing a very challenging hike or something similar. You don’t need to be drinking a sports drink if leisure is your main goal on your camping trip. Staying sufficiently hydrated with water is key. A good rule of thumb is to have two 32 ounce water bottles per person in your group to drink throughout the day.Healthy Camping Ideas // Cohesive Fitness

//Have fun

The most important thing is to have fun when you are camping. Experiencing the great outdoors is something you may not get to enjoy as often as you would like. Camping is a great way to bond with your friends and family. You may even consider bringing a board game or two to play at dusk before the sun goes down. Try creating obstacle courses, or even workout challenges to keep on track with any goals you may have, but don’t be afraid to splurge a little on those Bailey’s Toasted Marshmallows!! Enjoy!

    I love camping! I have pretty much my standard camping meals everytime we go so it makes planning really easy.

  • Jen,

    I am pretty similar. We are very much creatures of habit anyway, which is why I don’t post a lot of recipes on here because it would get boring quick lol! Having a pre determined plan is a great way to streamline the camping process. It is so easy to forget things when packing!

    Thank you!!! We have a few camping trips coming up, and I needed this. I want to stay pretty healthy while we’re gone, and my last few trips (non-camping) I have survived off too many protein and energy bars. NOT GOOD. lol. And, those unique desserts are so fun! So happy we could connect at Blogfest. Your site is GREAT! I love it!

    Camping is one of our favorite things to do. With a little planning it’s pretty easy to keep it on the healthier side. Being introduced to Siggi’s is one of my greatest takeaways from Blogfest 🙂 Have a fantastic Wednesday Steph!

  • Thanks Jill,

    I actually took Siggi’s with me on the camping trip. It was a great breakfast with all the protein!
